Free Market Essay - 803 Words
Business Ethics Assignment 3 March 21, 2012 Free Market System in Belize According to the Investopedia, ââ¬Ëa free market system is a market economy based on supply and demand with little or no government control. It is a completely free market in which buyers and sellers are allowed to transact freely based on a mutual agreement on price without Government intervention in the form of taxes, subsidies or regulationââ¬â¢. Therefore, the free market system is good for Belize. Belize positively benefits from this system because it ensures competitive markets, the consumers are part of the decision making process, and the supply and demand create competition. The freeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Supply and demand create competition, which helps ensure that the best goods or services are provided to consumers at a lower price. This will lead the businesses to having better quality and service and by having this the business itself becomes an overall better business. This benefits the society because they are receiving better goods and services and at a lower price. An example would be the fruits and vegetables sold at the market. Different stalls at the market may have different prices, so the consumer may have the option to buy the one with the lowest price or the one with the best quality. If the good is bought based on the lowest price then the other stalls will need to lower their price as well because if they donââ¬â¢t then they might not sell their goods. In an article by Chris Seabury, he states that in the United States those who want the removal of government intervention say the free market would force the businesses to protect the consumer. This in turn would provide the customers with quality goods and services at low price. Also he stated that there are several disadvantages to having government intervention. Government intervention can create a huge government bureaucracy, it can create huge monopolies, and it can compress innovation by over-regulating. Firstly, government regulation creates a huge governmen t bureaucracy that stifles growth. Teams and Team Processes Group Dynamics Free Essays
Teams are often depicted as a group of people sharing leadership of and working together on a specific project, whereas a group (but not a team) consists of individuals who work independently and are led by a strong, focused individual (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). In the health care organization, it is important to have a group of people working together as a well a team. Each person individually need to fully understand what his or her role is in a group or team, if not there will be conflicts. We will write a custom essay sample on Teams and Team Processes: Group Dynamics or any similar topic only for you Order Now Teams and Team Processes: Group Dynamics What is a group? A group consists of two or more people who interact with each other and share a common purpose (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). A team is a type of group (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). Teams are an essential part of any organization, especially within the healthcare organization. Each individual on a team plays a vital role in ensuring that all needs are met, task are completed daily and patients are being cared for properly. Teamwork and collaboration between all health professionals results in high quality clinical care, and increased job satisfaction for staff (Begley, 2009). When team members do not agree on the same goal, conflicts will arise. It is important for healthcare managers to control and management all conflicts within the organization. The key to successful conflict management is for each side to first stop trying to ââ¬Å"make each other wrong,â⬠and then to find solutions that approximate each sideââ¬â¢s goals (Haraway Haraway III, 2005). In the case study presented, Nurse B voices concerns about working with fellow staff members of the surgical team. The atmosphere and moral for the team is steadily declining. In addition the job satisfaction and passion to go to work has also been impacted. In order for a team to be effective and provide quality care, the atmosphere of the team needs to be welcomed and appreciated. Better outcomes will be achieved when team members perceive supportive team atmosphere and an empowering team contact with clear and jointly developed goals, an appropriate mix of skills and expertise, and rewards linked to team performance (Proenca, 2007). After further review of the case study, conflict management among team members needs to be addressed. Resolving conflict can often be like a constant balancing act among the opposing needs and interests; conflict can be unpleasant and stressful (Haraway Haraway III, 2005). Conflict manage is essential for the success of healthcare organizations. Learning, as an organization, to constructively manage and succeed in conflict situations is a foundational construct of leadership and management (Ledlow, 2009). There are six different conflict styles: (1) accommodating, (2) avoiding, (3) collaborating, (4) competing, (5) compromising and (6) problem solving. After reading the case study, the surgical team is displaying conflict style of avoiding ââ¬Å"potential disruption outweighs the benefits of resolution, gathering information supersedes immediate decision making, others can resolve the conflict more effectively and issues seem a result of other issues,â⬠(Ledlow, 2009). Instead of going to the Physician Assistant, Nurse B should feel comfortable speaking to the surgeon with her questions and concerns. In addition to displaying avoiding conflict style, Nurse B surgical team is also experiencing role conflict. Role conflict arises when a focal personââ¬â¢s ideas of his or her requirements are incongruent with expectations from roles set members (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). It is vital for each person to know what his or her role is. There are four types of role conflicts: (1) intrarole, (2) intrasender, (3) interole and (4) inersender. The general distinction between these four types of conflict is whether the focal person is perceiving the incongruence with his or her own standards or values (intra-) or whether the focal person recognizes the conflict arising due incompatibilities among others and/or policies (inter-) (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). In order for Nurse B surgical team to be successful, each staff member must realize they are a group of people who collectively make up one team. The four steps to transform a group into team are: (1) forming, (2) storming, (3) norming and (4) performing. In forming, the team has initial contact with other staff members to see who will be a part of the team. There will be different views on how procedures should be. In step two, storming, the group will have conflict with role, status and power of each member. The next step, normimg group member will begin to create and agree upon the rules of the group. Finally in step four, performing, the team knows and understands what each of their roles are and begins to work together as a team to achieve the same goal. Once the group comes together collectively, Nurse B surgical team will have group cohesion. Group cohesion refers to a shared vision, unity of goals and objectives, pride in group membership, and collective group identity (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). After the team has been established, each team member must continue to strive toward the same goal. Intervention technique is a good recommendation for Nurse B surgical team. Intervention helps to improve situations. An intervention can be a training session on conflict resolution, changes made to team structure, and the development of guidelines outlining team membersââ¬â¢ roles. Intervention helps to provide training to team members on what procedures are still current and the procedures not being used. Goal setting training leads to greater effectiveness at the individual level and improved team efficiency (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). In summary, Nurse B surgical team will be successful once he or she identifies his or her conflicts and begin working as a team; thus improving the efficiency and quality of the department. In a team, individualsââ¬â¢ actions are interdependent and coordinated, each member has a specified role, and members share common task goals or objectives (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). Conflict management and role conflict can hinder the success of a team. Role conflict arises when a focal personââ¬â¢s ideas of his or her requirements are incongruent with expectations from role set members (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). Trust and communication is important to the success of a team. A key component to healthy group dynamics is communication or role expectation; trust is developed when team members experience seemingly predictable situations, exchange information about oneself with others, reciprocate, and open up (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). It essential for healthcare managers to ensure that each person understands what his or her roles are. Healthcare administrators must take steps to design better teams, train team members to work together, manage team performance, structure the work performed by the team and provide support to team members (Erofeev, Glazer, Ivanitskaya, 2009). Commercial Critique Essay Example
Commercial Critique Paper Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, is gastroesophageal reflux through the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) into the esophagus or oropharynx that produces symptoms, injury to esophageal tissue, or both. The stomach continuously produces hydrochloric acid that helps in digesting food. GERD is related to failure of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to close properly. This results in reflux of acid into the unprotected lining of the esophagus. The pathophysiology of GERD is not completely understood and is complex. The main etiologic factors are believed to be an abnormal LES pressure and increased reflux during temporary LES relaxation. The inner lining of the stomach is protected from the acid ââ¬Å"by the presence of prostaglandins present in gastric mucus that inhibit gastric secretion, stimulate bicarbonate ion secretion, and enhance blood flowâ⬠(OMalley, 2010). The stomach is also protected by ââ¬Å"tight intracellular junctions and a mucin layer over epithelial cellsâ⬠(OMalley, 2010). Medications used to treat GERD include H2-receptor antagonists, antacids, and proton pump inhibitors in nonprescription and prescription strength. Antacids neutralize stomach acid, include Maalox, Mylanta, and Tums, and may provide quick relief. Antacids will not heal an esophagus damaged by stomach acid. H2-receptor antagonists are medications that work by reducing the amount of acid the stomach produces by blocking an important producer of acid- histamine 2. H2-receptor blockers include cimetidine (Tagamet HB), famotidine (Pepcid AC), or ranitidine (Zantac 75). H2 receptors blockers are slower acting than antacids but last longer.Proton pump inhibitors block acid production and heal the esophagus. Proton pump inhibitors include lansoprazole (Prevacid 24 HR), omeprazole (Prilosec OTC), and Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) (GERD: Treatment and Drugs, 2010). Proton pump inhibitors reduce the production of acid by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. The reduction of acid prevents ulcers and allows any ulcers that exist in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum to heal. In an Internet advertisement for Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), it states thatà persistent heartburn two or more days a week, despite treatment and diet changes, could be acid reflux disease. In addition, it states, ââ¬Å"Only your doctor can diagnose acid reflux disease and determine if there is any damage to your esophagus siteâ⬠Dexilant is a timed release Proton pump inhibitor that is a prescription medication that can provide relief for up to 24 hours. It is available in 30 mg. or 60 mg. in a dual release capsule taken with or without food. The capsule contains two different types of granules; one is released immediately and the other about four to five hours later (About Dexilant, 2010). Prilosec OTC is also advertised on the Internet. The page has a lot of useful health information including a description of how heartburn is caused, how Prilosec OTC works to stop acid production, common foods and lifestyle factors that cause heartburn (heartburn triggers). The advertisement goes on to list trigger foods and simple tips for making smart choices to fight frequent heartburn, including the right diet and a healthy lifestyle. The ad then discusses the 14-Day Prilosec OTC Regimen: ââ¬Å"Prilosec OTC blocks the burn for 24 hours with one pill a dayâ⬠. Claims made in the advertisement for Prilosec OTC are that it is a proactive treatment, unlike most reactive heartburn treatments. The ad goes on to state that Prilosec OTC is in the strongest class of heartburn medicines available over the counter. Other statements regarding Prilosec OTC are that it blocks heartburn before it begins with one pill a day for 14 days, and it was the first prescription proton pump inhibitor (PPI) introduced. In 2003, Prilosec becomes the first PPI available over the counter and in 2004, it becomes the number one selling OTC heartburn medicine for treating frequent heartburn, and finally, in 2005, it was named the number one doctor recommended OTC acid reducer (Heartburn Treatment and Heartburn Relief, 2010). For Dexilant, advertisement claims include a statement that it ââ¬Å"heals damage to the esophagus and keeps it from coming backâ⬠(About Dexilant, 2010). The ad goes on to claim that clinical studies have shown that Dexilant not only relieves heartburn around the clock, but also heals damage (erosions) to the esophagus and keeps it from coming back. ââ¬Å"Individual results may varyâ⬠. However, it does not say what study was done or give any information concerning it. It also claims Dexilant can provide up to 24 hours of heartburn relief in many adults with acid reflux disease (About Dexilant, 2010). Both medications are Proton pump inhibitors and are used to treat heartburn and GERD. Proton pump inhibitors are very similar in action and there is no evidence that one is more effective than another is (GERD: Treatment and Drugs, 2010). They differ in how they are broken-down by the liver and their drug interactions. Proton pump inhibitors interact with few drugs. The absorption into the body of some drugs is affected by the presence of acid in the stomach, and because PPIs reduce acid in the stomach, they may affect the absorption of these drugs. PPIs reduce the absorption and concentration in the blood of Nizoral and increase the absorption and concentration of Lanoxin. There may be reduced effectiveness of Nizoral and an increase in Lanoxin toxicity (Heartburn Treatment and Heartburn Relief, 2010). Prilosec is more likely than the other PPIs to reduce the breakdown of drugs by the liver and may increase the concentration in the blood of Valium, Coumadin and Dilantin (Heartburn Treatment and Heartburn Relief, 2010). Before taking Dexilant, tell your doctor if you are taking ampicillin, atazanavir, digoxin, iron, ketoconazole, or tacrolimus. Before taking Prilosec OTC, tell your physician if you are taking warfarin, prescription antifungal or anti-yeast medicines, diazepam, or digoxin (Heartburn Treatment and Heartburn Relief, 2010). Side effects of Prilosec OTC include headache, diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach, cough, dizziness, rash, cold symptoms. The most common side effects of Dexilant were diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, common cold, vomiting, and gas. Both advertisements had a question and section. The Prilosec OTC ad had a lot of information regarding heartburn and GERD, and information on healthy foods and lifestyle. The Dexilant ad had links for coupons and a symptom checker. The Prilosec OTC ad also had a safety announcement discussing a possible increased risk of fractures. It states ââ¬Å"On May 25, 2010, the FDA released a drug-class announcement stating that all prescription and over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) product labeling will be revised as a precautionary measure to include a possible increased risk of hip, wrist, and spine fracturesâ⬠(Heartburn Treatment and Heartburn Relief, 2010). In addition, there was also a public health advisory issued by the FDA, on the Prilosec OTC ad, that recommends patients avoid the combination of omeprazole products (i. e. , Prilosec Rxà ®, Prilosec OTCà ®, and generic/store-brand omeprazole) with clopidogrel, which is marketed as Plavixà ®. Omeprazole (Prilosec) may reduce the anti-clotting effect of Plavix (Heartburn Treatment and Heartburn Relief, 2010). I could not find these warning on the Dexilant. Both medications had the safety warning concerning pregnancy and nursing. References About Dexilant. (2010). Public Administration Essay Writing Guide All You Need to Know
Public Administration Essay Writing Guide All You Need to Know Public Administration is a complex academic discipline that studies the implementation of government policies and prepares students for working in the public sector. The field of public administration has a diverse scope of application, including the management of public and state programs, the analysis of government initiatives, and appropriate approaches to creating alternative policies. Therefore, public administration essay writing provides students with an opportunity to enhance their skills, enrich their knowledge, and gain useful experience in the field of public services. Apart from understanding what public administration deals with, the following list of questions will help you become confident about your essay: Are you aware of public administration basics? Do you have the profound knowledge of the essay topic? Can you apply your knowledge in practice effectively? Are you able to explain government policies and regulations with the use of relevant public administration theories? Can you distinguish the main arguments and draw proper conclusions? How can your work be valuable in the field of public administration? Are you satisfied with the research ideas and subsequent results? Will you write an identical essay if you have a chance to change it somehow? With these questions in mind, you should plan your writing process, showing attention to every detail. Looking through this list of questions will help you understand your professorââ¬â¢s expectations regarding your future public administration essay. Before writing an essay, you should make up in your mind what you will write about and how you will approach the topic. The given guide is to help you with writing a perfect public administration essay. Choosing a Suitable Topic for a Public Administration Essay Certainly, there is a wide range of topics that can be used in public administration essay. However, your main task is to develop an interesting and original topic that will express as many points as possible. If you do not have a particular topic for your essay, you should create it by yourself. For this, you should be: Creative. Apply all creativity you can and let your mind wander along the most interesting essay topics in public administration. For example, if you take Medicare, namely the latest health care reform in the United States and write about its advantages and disadvantages for society, it will be an essay of little value and importance. Many professionals in public administration have already analyzed Instead, try to think big and write about how public administration approach to healthcare changed over time using the example of the Medicare reform. Try to be objective when analyzing facts and forming judgments. Choose a complex topic that will have different definitions and various treatments in the field. Perform a rational and unbiased analysis of the topic instead of listing the benefits of a particular matter. For instance, if you want to write your public administration essay about the death penalty, make it multifaceted instead of just criticizing or praising the reform implementation. Thus, you should attempt to show many perspectives, including cultural, social, criminal, and historical points of view, to show that you see a big picture concerning the issue. Open-minded. Do not focus on a particular area of public administration for your analysis. You should be open-minded and willing to consider different ideas when choosing a suitable topic for your essay. For example, if you want to write on drug control policies in businesses and cannot create a right topic, write about drug control policies in media, schools, religious organizations, or healthcare institutions. Remember that the more time you spend on your choice of the topic, the less time you will have for the writing process. Thus, being open-minded, critical, and creative, you will have more chances to choose a suitable topic for your public administration essay. Besides, the following list of topics will help you organize your ideas and make up your own title for an essay: The Influence of Public Administration Policies on the Public Interest; The Comparison between Fraud and Stealing as Popular Public Issues; The Practicability of Max Weberââ¬â¢s Classical Model Theory in Public Administration; Net Neutrality in Public Administration Discourse; The Connection between Public Administration and the Organizational Environment; Rourkes Views on Federalism and Bureaucracies; The Impact of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 on Policy Formulation; The Role of Political Pressure on the Success of Public Administration Services; The Main Causes of Tense Relationships between the Public and Political Leaders. You should also remember that whatever topic you aim at, it can encompass various disciplines as well, for example, Law, Politics, Business, or Economics. 3 Main Aspects of Public Administration Essay Writing Our Experts Highlight Before you reflect upon a particular topic that you have chosen, review the three pillars of the public administration essay writing: efficiency, effectiveness, and economy. Efficiency is a very important concept in the field of public administration that is highly valued by educational instructors. It means that you can wisely utilize your resources and demonstrate the relationship between them in the essay. If you can show the logical connection between your sources of information, your essay can be called efficient. For example, if you write about the pay and benefits package for social and government workers and mainly use the information from the National Security Agency website, it means that you donââ¬â¢t appropriately distribute the resources throughout your essay, and your work is inefficient. Effectiveness is also an essential aspect in public administration essay writing. As such, your professor is likely to assess the extent to which you achieve your objectives or goals determined in the introductory paragraph. If you manage to justify your point of view, your essay is effective. For instance, if you set a goal in your introduction to define measures of corruption and human rights violations, but in conclusion, you reflect upon methods for dealing with them, your essay is ineffective. Economy is a central concept in administration essay writing since it is vital to use the minimum amount of sources cited and the maximum amount of your personal analysis and justification. If your public administration essay is filled with many in-text citations, it will resemble a simple literature review. In particular, it happens when you write about a macro issue in public administration such as the range of governmental activities from failed states to complete socialism. As a result, your essay is full of in-text citations from different journals and encyclopedias. It implies that your concept of the economy failed. The Well-Developed Structure of a Public Administration Essay When you choose an appropriate topic for your public administration essay, you should look through and understand the structure of this type of assignment. It is true that the public administration essay structure is similar to the essay structure in other disciplines. The skeleton of the essay, which includes an introduction, main body, and conclusion, is the foundation of any writing assignment. The only difference is in the way you use your sources and present them to the reader. That is why it is significant to review all segments of your future essay in detail. Introduction That Works Well The main aim of the introduction is to present your topic to the reader and give sufficient background information about the major issues. As such, you should provide your rationale behind the work and demonstrate its significance in the field of public administration. The introduction is designed to grab the readerââ¬â¢s attention and raise his/her interest. The hook can include a bold statement, surprising statistical data, or some quote from a popular public administrator. Make your introductory paragraph as concise as possible to provide only an overall review of your essay. The concluding statement of the introduction should be your thesis statement in which you present your position on the essay topic. In general, a thesis statement represents an accurate summary of the objectives you want to reach in your essay. It is one of the most important elements of the essay because it tells the reader what arguments you will justify in the main body. It is important to write a thesis statement in one sentence which will serve as a basis for your subsequent argumentation. To make your thesis statement as effective as possible, you should ensure that it directly answers the question of the essay and makes a claim that can be disputable. The following list contains examples of strong and effective thesis statements: In the field of public administration, the most significant organizational challenges include the advancement of technology, ethical governance, and human resource management. A role of citizenship and benevolence in a fair public administration is discussed in relation to the main causes of the tense relationship between the public and politics. Corruption is detrimental to the welfare of the public administration domain due to wrong decisions, decreased public interest, and possible violation of human rights. Main Body That Develops Your Thesis Statement The main body is probably the most significant part of your essay because your thesis statement will not work unless you prove it using strong arguments. In the main body of your public administration essay, you should show how you analyze a topic. Every question you are going to discuss should appear in a separate paragraph. In addition, every paragraph should begin with a topic sentence in which you present your argument and a concluding statement where you decide whether the further analysis proved or refuted your argument. You should not add any irrelevant information to your essay simply to meet the word count. It would be a great idea to organize your main body in the way that more important arguments appear first. Conclusion That Completes Your Essay Logically After your essay is finished, you come to writing a conclusion as a logical completion. In other words, frame your analysis in the best logical way to make your work more appealing to the reader in conclusion. Hence, you should restate your thesis statement and summarize the main arguments mentioned in the essay body. Logically, your conclusion should show the results of all findings briefly. You should consider the conclusion as the last opportunity to convince your professor that your essay is efficient and effective at the same time. Thus, it deserves a good grade. Remember that you cannot introduce new concepts and ideas that are not mentioned in the main body of your essay. Instead, you should focus on the essential arguments of the public administration essay and formulate the ultimate meaning. General Public Administration Essay Recommendations on Citing If you already know how to choose a suitable topic, structure your essay, and express your thoughts proficiently, you should know how to choose and use information sources. In the process of writing a public administration essay, you will significantly rely on the othersââ¬â¢ ideas. Indeed, it is vital to cite them in the text correctly. A list of references used in the essay can contain various scholarly books, scientific articles, and online articles from educational and governmental websites. You should note that the extended information about the used sources should be placed on the last page of your essay. Additionally, organize your bibliography in an alphabetical order. Remember that each time you use the opinion of other people, you should cite it according to the rules of referencing. Every piece of information that is not the common knowledge should be cited in your public administration essay to avoid plagiarism issues. Example of the in-text citation in MLA style: The modern public administration is independent of social and political systems, representing a cooperative group effort in a public setting (Fry and Raadschelders 56). Example of the in-text citation in APA style: The integral view on public administration was endorsed by L.D. Bbusiness management - Essay Example BMW focused on the market trends and strategies in order to get a hold on high share in the market. BMW Case Analysis What main trends are identifiable in the business environment in general and in the automobile market in particular in 2004 that might affect BMWââ¬â¢s strategy? The main trends that are identifiable in business environment mainly include the competition between the different brands of same product category. It is on the basis of the quality and differentiation that is created by every brand. In automobile market the most important trend that is identifiable is the uniqueness in terms of design, price, quality and convenience provided to every customer when it comes to use. Whether itââ¬â¢s for any segment, the prime objective of automobile industry is to provide the ease to use it. According to Porterââ¬â¢s Generic BMW is highly differentiated in the automobile market, and this differentiation was on the basis of brand itself that created different identity in consumers mind. BMW conveys a perception of prestige and dignity for the high-end users. Uniqueness in terms of design seems to be the most important weapon for any company to fight and to move in fastââ¬âpaced automobile industry. But in 2004 the market for automobile industry became more concentrated and productive. ... ere was no issue of quality in this year because of rapid growth of automobile industry but consumers of North America and Western Europe started demanding cheaper cars due to economic instability which forced them to reduce the spending on non-essential goods, and this adversely impacted the matured car market. On the other hand the market of Asia especially in China the demand of highââ¬âend and expensive models increased. Henceforth, quality was not the issue in 2004 whereas every company was focusing on placing their brand on the top of automobile industry. The war was of branding not of quality because the quality was no longer an issue (Mathews, 2006). 1. Using Porterââ¬â¢s five-force framework, attempt an analysis of the competition in the automobile industry in 2004 (adopt the BMW perspective). Consider the time horizon of strategic planning and attempt to identify what future changes are likely for that period in the light of the factors at play in the macro-environme nt. Industrial Rivalry ââ¬â The competition became so ferocious, there was no room for differentiation and growth was slow because industry was in the mature phase. So, the focus turned to price of the product in automobile industry. Those who set economical prices and uniqueness into their brands were ruling the market. Quality was the weapon and the design too but that no more be considered as factor for choice-making, it was necessary for car makers to look for quality of product. Profitability was affected badly due to various external factors as well as competition. Substitutes ââ¬â In 2004 automobile industry was facing substitute like motor bike, boats and leisure cruises were immensely used. Potential Entrants ââ¬â Deluxe cars like Ford entered the market with Jaguar and Volvo models and

An Invaluable Study with Slight Setbacks A Review of Weeks Coming Out Essay
An Invaluable Study with Slight Setbacks A Review of Weeks Coming Out - Essay Example A closer examination, however, of how specific social events influenced homosexual identity would have greatly aided in creating an understanding of the relationship and origins homosexual identity has in British society. Thus, Weeks emphasizes the structural existence of homosexuality, while failing to consider the forces that might have established this structure. "We tend to think now that the word 'homosexual' has an unvarying meaning, beyond time and history." Weeks writes. "In fact it is itself a product of history, a cultural artifact designed to express a particular concept." (3) Often who we define as a homosexual runs no further than the sexual acts in which a person engages. The basis of this definition, however, fails to consider what type of person is or is not a homosexual. Weeks suggests that the reasons for crafting this shallow connotation towards homosexuality appears to have been to provide a standard on which to label permissible and impressible behavior and also to limit the number of those who are viewed as untraditional. In addition to carefully describing the differences between historical and social aspects of homosexuality, Weeks makes sure to describe the differences in treatment towards various types of "homosexuals." Weeks pays particular consideration towards Lesbians, who Weeks describes as "invisible women" (80) and who debatably may have suffered even more hardships than homosexual men. Like most gender studies, Weeks also tackles the objective of showing that although the idea of "homosexuality" is a product of specific circumstances, homosexuality is wide ranging and alludes any historical or cultural constructs. After the introductory section of this book, these two objectives are placed in the background as tools for understanding the history of homosexuality in Britain. As Weeks linearly traces the development of homosexual struggles in England, he crafts the notion that the acceptance of homosexuality in England is growing significantly. Thus, homosexuality appears to be escaping the negative conceptions with which it has previously been associated. Weeks primarily bases his argument that the acceptance of homosexuality in England is growing by citing the increasing number of gay rights supporters. After levels of prejudice against homosexual rose to peak levels after World War II, radical movements in the 1970's by the Gay Liberation Front resulted in stagger numbers of supporters and gay badge wearers. Furthermore, Weeks makes a slight mention that homosexuality was once even more confined than is has been over the course of the previous centuries. Although homosexuality was prevalent, occurring in "knightly orders," "medieval scandals," and certain "monarch courts" (35), it was always confined. In Weeks's portrait of the widening acceptance of homosexuality throughout the previous century, he fails to create an in-depth portrait of how England's various cultural and economic transitions helped to impact perspectives of homosexuality. The book is not without its failures. I
